When something isn’t working, the first impulse is to find motivation. Listen to an inspiring podcast, make a plan, promise yourself a reward.
But sometimes the problem isn’t motivation. Sometimes the body and mind simply run out.
1. Everything takes double the effort
Things that used to come easily now require enormous effort. Replying to an email feels like an achievement. Calling a friend is a task that takes days to build up to.
This is not laziness. It’s the system sending a signal.
2. Rest doesn’t help
You go to sleep — and wake up just as tired. Weekends don’t recharge you. A holiday feels like another source of stress.
When rest stops restoring — the deficit has accumulated too deep.
3. You’re angry at yourself for “doing nothing”
This is the most telling sign. Someone who needs motivation thinks: “I need to get started.” Someone who needs rest thinks: “Something is wrong with me.”
Motivation is fuel. But if the tank is empty, no ignition will help. Fill the tank first.
